Kerala Public Works Department builds, operates and maintains Rest Houses and Tourist/Inspection Bungalows in all cities and towns and hill stations of the State. Currently there are 155 Rest houses/ Inspection Bungalows /TBs under the control of PWD. Rooms in Rest Houses are available for stay of Government officials on duty at the places and to general public according to availability. The Rest Houses are classified into two classes based on the location, number of rooms etc as Class-I and Class-II .

Construction, operation and maintenance of PWD Rest Houses are under the Buildings Wing of PWD. The Executive Engineer of concerned Buildings Division of PWD is the Reserving Authority of a Rest House while the custodian officer is the Assistant Engineer of concerned Buildings Section and the Controlling Authority is the Chief Engineer (Buildings).
